Covid took the starch out of many people, including me. During the long ordeal, it is the land out here that has been helpful and restorative on so many levels.
When everyone was isolating, I can tell you there were times I’d go out into the Great Basin in Utah and Nevada and I’d get so isolated, there would be no other people around for what seemed like 100 square miles.
We have had a major influx of folks who came into the country since the start of 2020. A great many of them have gone out into our wild places, with quite a few doing so for the first time.
When the pandemic struck, we were in the process of filming a documentary about the territories across which we roam and have roamed over many years.
That work has been difficult to finish because of illness but it is back underway. When it is done, it will be posted to the You Tube channel we have been putting together.
With all the new population out here, as we have been getting back out filming, we have seen some kinds of behavior that has been somewhat difficult to understand.
Remember, if you respect the land, you will be rewarded in many remarkable ways. Please try to leave no trace in places that are truly spectacular and pristine.
Our mantra at The Territorial is that all people should have a chance to experience the West. Whether you travel in a variety of vehicles, ride a horse or walk does not matter. What matters is that you get out there.
At the same time, each of us bears a responsibility to leave things as natural as possible so that others may come after you and enjoy the clean and beautiful landscapes of the American West.
Go. Have fun. Be safe and make memories.
John Harrington, Founder and Executive Editor
The rugged West of the American experience evolved across an ancient and complex timeline.
It’s origin story can be traced to the earliest periods of the Earth’s natural history. It’s human story has yet to be fully understood, but what is known provides the canvas for virtually every type of tale one can imagine.
The Territorial was founded and is dedicated to the telling of those tales- one at a time, with great care and a love developed over nearly a half century of wandering around in and covering the West.
Behind the ethic of The Territorial stands a deep respect for the land, the people, the cultures, the food and the experiences that still surprise and enthrall without fail.
These pages will soon come to life with images and words meant to encourage immersion in one of the most unique regions on the planet.
